The landscape of your life

September 9, 2015 by Brenda 1 Comment

When travelling up to the West Coast of South Africa to witness the wild flowers in spring, although these are the main focus, there is so much else to see and experience. In the farmlands, there are crops of Canola purposely planted to harvest and produce oil. These fields of flowers form vivid yellow blocks in the tapestry of the landscape.

These crops happen to flower at the same time as the natural phenomenon of the magical Western Cape wild flowers. The distinction is that the Canola are purposely planted and thus each ‘block’ of colour appears solid as only one kind of plant, the Canola is growing in that area. The soil is purposely kept fertile to ensure the best outcomes and usually the whole field has a similar texture. The fields of wild flowers have a different kind of mottled beauty as a multitude of natural flowers grow together coming into flower in a natural sequence. These beautiful changing tapestries add texture and colour to the landscape. So the process is dynamic, constantly changing. In addition, external factors like the intensity and position of the sun impact on what can be seen and our perception of it.

Above I have given the examples of the ‘Big picture’ beauty of a crop orchestrated by man and the magnificence of a natural area of wild flowers. In the second picture we are coming closer to seeing individual plants and detail. However, I find it fascinating to look even more closely. Seeing the flowers in the context of their surroundings adds even greater depth to our appreciation of the miracle of the wild flowers in the Western Cape.

I purposely took this photo in order to show the context in which some flowers grow. It also shows proportion and highlights the treasure we may find when we pay attention. The tiny white flowers in the picture above are hi-lit in the photo below.

So what is my message? Sometimes we need to purposely create a pause in our busy lives and pay attention to the beauty around us. By looking from a distance we’ll gain one impressing. By getting up close, our view will alter. By reflecting on what we see we sometimes see patterns forming. And these can add greater meaning. So what action will you take?

My questions for you are:

  • What in your life is planned by man – and how ‘in tune’ are you to the natural flow of nature?
  • How often are you viewing life from a distance as you travel life’s journey?
  • When are you taking the time to search for the treasures in barren land?
  • How often do you get up close and looked carefully at specific items in your life?
  • What patterns do you see forming?
  • What is the meaning of these?
  • How effectively can you plan and implement action on reflection?

The parts of the whole

September 7, 2015 by Brenda Leave a Comment

As we entered the West Coast National Park in South Africa, hoping to see the natural phenomenon of the wild flowers in August, at first we might have felt disappointed. There were no flowers to be seen from the car.

However, as we travelled further into the Park, a feast of magical sights ensued. These varied from barren land, to wild sea views, beaches and sand-dunes forming a backdrop to magnificent carpets of various coloured flowers. At times these tapestries were predominantly orange and at others, blue or white.

As we came closer to the fields of flowers there were areas where we were permitted to leave the car and could walk amongst the flowers. Looking closely at small areas we could marvel at the variety of flowers in bloom. In the picture below you can see five different flowers. And just look at the detail in each flower and leaf!

My invitation is for you to consider the distinction between seeing the beauty of flowers from a distance and getting up close so you can actively engage with the flowers. These are two different approaches to admiring the wild flowers in the Western Cape. And both are wonderful ways to experience this miracle that occurs each year. In the first we marvel at the tapestry which nature has woven. In the second, we appreciate the intricate details of the plants and flowers weaving our picture.

I believe this is a metaphor which we can use in so many areas of our lives. In certain cases we complacently or lazily notice only the big picture. In others we may curiously examine the parts and their interconnectedness. Perhaps we should always be conscious that we are doing one or the other? And then we can make choices. It can add greater variety to our perspectives on many aspects and issues we face. Try it! You might be surprised at how you always view things in the same way. Experimenting could add greater meaning.

My questions for you are:

  • As you journey along life’s journey, what signs are you seeing along the way?
  • Just ‘going the extra mile’ how different might your view be?
  • If you shift your emphasis from the whole, the ‘big picture’, how might you appreciate the parts?
  • How often are you getting in touch with nature?
  • What journeys do you need to make?

The sun sets in the West

September 2, 2015 by Brenda Leave a Comment

It is a great privilege to be able to experience the West Coast in South Africa especially during the ‘flower season’.  Although the magic of the natural phenomenon of the flowers bursting into bloom is a great attraction, there is so much else to appreciate.  For example, being the West Coast, the sun sets over the sea and the sunsets are magnificent.

blog185a

As I stood on the beach marvelling at the great beauty of the sunset near Lamberts Bay, I was intrigued by the sound that my shoes were making on the sand.  I looked down and was surprised that I wasn’t standing on sand… there was a layer of shells.

blog185

Often we may be engrossed using one of our senses in capturing an experience.  However, if we consciously use other senses at the same time, we can expand and include different dimensions to this overall experience.  In the above example, I was using sight to focus on the beauty of the changing light during sunset.   It was almost dark and it was my sense of hearing that alerted me to the fact that I wasn’t treading on sand which is what I’d expect on a South African beach.  The thick layer of shells fascinated me and raised many questions in my mind regarding the reasons for this volume being washed up on the beach.  I still don’t know the answer – do you?

So here we are considering different perspectives.  The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.  So where I come from, KwaZulu-Natal I’m accustomed to watching the sun rise over the sea.  Watching the sun set over the sea provides a shift in focus.  Another change in concentration in my example above was looking out to sea, a horizontal view.  Looking down towards my feet meant a vertical shift.  I also changed from using predominantly sight to capture the experience of sunset, to noticing sound and therefor shifting my view to the shells.  What are you doing to shift your perspective?

We were privileged to see the flowers at their very best this year.  Yet, another focus of reflection is the context within which visitors are able to experience this wonderful natural phenomenon. We were able to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the local people who are passionate about their surroundings.  And this created the framework in which we were able to experience the magnificence of the natural phenomenon like the flowers, sunsets and beautiful scenery.

These are amongst my ‘touchstones’ which I define as those experiences, sights, sounds, smells, tastes and feelings which bring out the best in me and make me feel ‘whole’.  I consciously try to incorporate these into my life wherever possible.  I encourage my clients to do the same – to identify and then incorporate their touchstones into their lives whenever possible.

My questions for you are:

  1. How can you train yourself to take in more aspects of an experience by using various senses?
  2. By changing your perspective, what else might change?
  3. What are you doing to shift so that you can see things from different perspectives?
  4. How can this help you to become more curious?
  5. What are your touchstones?
  6. How can you incorporate more of these into your life?
  7. How else can you broaden the range of possibilities in your life?
  8. By paying more attention to the framework that is making your experience possible, how can you see aspects of your life in context?
  9. As a result of reading this article (experience), and answering these questions, what other reflections do you have?
  10. In one sentence, please crystallise the meaning you have gained from your reflections.
  11. As a result of this, what action are you going to take?
